One thing’s for sure: April is a strong month for cinema this year! With everything from science fiction to black comedies, biblical epics to Indonesian gangster movies, Russell Crowe to Chiwetel Ejiofor, you’re sure to find lots to keep you entertained!

To save you the time, we at Flicks and the City have whittled down the long list of releases to the 11 must-see movies of the month. Enjoy!


Release Date: 4 April

Why Should You Watch It? The Hollywood retelling of the biblical story of Noah’s Ark has been a long time coming, and you can bet that the special effects and cinematography alone will be breathtaking. However, with Darren Aronofsky behind the camera this is definitely not going to be just another epic blockbuster. The Black Swan and Requiem For A Dream director has re-worked the story so that instead of the traditional ‘animals going in two-by-two’ being the heart and focus of the film, it’s all about Noah’s family. With Russell Crowe, Emma Watson and Anthony Hopkins leading the star-studded cast, it’s clear to see that Noah will certainly be one to watch!

Why Should You Watch It? Divergent is the latest young adult novel to be adapted for the big screen and already has a huge, devoted fanbase. Set in a dystopian future where society has been split into five factions based on personality type in order to maintain everlasting peace, Divergent tells the story of Tris (Shailene Woodley), a teenager who discovers that she doesn’t fit into just one faction, thus becoming a threat to the peaceful existence of the city. If that isn’t enough to reel you in then perhaps the fact that Kate Winslet plays baddie Jeanine Matthews will entice!

The Double

Release Date: 4 April

Why Should You Watch It? The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade directs The Double starring Jesse Eisenberg as a man who is driven insane by the appearance of his doppelganger. Following in the footsteps of Dominic Cooper in The Devil’s Double, Armie Hammer in The Social Network, and, erm, Lindsay Lohan in The Parent Trap, Eisenberg takes on the role of both Simon and doppelganger James in this comedy-drama.

The Quiet Ones

Release Date: 10 April

Why Should You Watch It? The latest Hammer film The Quiet Ones is definitely one to watch for horror fans out there! Inspired by true events, the film tells the story of a professor who performs a series of experiments on a young patient to push her to the brink of insanity in order to test his theory that you can create a poltergeist from negative energy. Expect spine-tingling stuff and great performances from Jared Harris (Mad Men), Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel)!

Why Should You Watch It? The cream of the Irish crop have united for this black comedy-drama, in which Brendan Gleeson plays Father James Lavelle – a good man who must fight the forces of darkness around him after he’s threatened during a confession. Chris O’DowdDylan Moran and Game of Thrones‘ Aidan Gillen also star in the film that gained critical acclaim following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Raid 2

Release Date: 11 April

Why Should You Watch It? Another Sundance great, the Indonesian film picks up shortly after where the first installment left off. Rookie Jakarta cop Rama (Iko Uwais) thought that he could return to normal life after escaping the gangsters from The Raid, however, he soon discovers his family are under threat and in order to protect them he must go undercover and work his way up through the criminal underworld to discover exactly which corrupt policemen and politicians are pulling the strings at the top.

Half Of A Yellow Sun

Release Date: 11 April

Why Should You Watch It? Following his Oscar-nominated performance in 12 Years a Slave, Chiwetel Ejiofor has become hot property and for his next film he teamed up with Thandie Newton in Biyi Bandele‘s film directorial debut. Half of a Yellow Sun documents the lives of four people during the struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria. Going by Ejiofor and Newton’s previous work you can guarantee that the film will be full of emotional performances and tear-jerking moments to boot.

We Are The Best

Release Date: 18 April

Why Should You Watch It? If you need your heart to be warmed and your memories of what it was like to be thirteen revisited, then this Swedish coming-of-age story is the one for you! Young actresses Mira BarkhammerMira Grosin, and Liv LeMoyne star as three best friends who want to form a punk band, despite everybody telling them that punk is dead. Don’t be put off by the subtitles and punk-rock setting; the themes of the film are innocence, friendship and childhood, and you are guaranteed to leave the cinema with a smile on your face!

Why Should You Watch It? If there’s been a Tom-Hardy-shaped hole in your life ever since The Dark Knight Rises, then never fear – the hard man is finally back on the big screen this month! Hardy stars as Ivan Locke, a construction manager whose life starts to unravel following a single phone call during his drive home, and the British drama also stars Olivia Colman and The Impossible‘s Tom Holland.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Release Date: 18 April

Why Should You Watch It? Another long-awaited return, this time in the form of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. In this installment, Peter begins to learn more about his father’s past whilst trying to balance his life as a high school student and a superhero. However with appearances from Electro, The Rhino and The Green Goblin in this sequel, it is clear to see that Peter Parker will have his work cut out in order to keep the city and girlfriend Gwen safe!

Why Should You Watch It? Johnny Depp takes on the role of a terminally ill scientist in this science-fiction thriller that marks the directorial debut from esteemed cinematographer Wally Pfister. In Transcendence Dr. Will Caster (Depp) manages to download his mind into a computer, granting him power beyond his wildest dreams. Set to be a true mind-bender, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Paul Bettany also star.
