UK Convention Guide: February-March 2014

Now we’re well and truly done with Christmas and New Year, it’s time for the UK convention scene to wake up again and kick into high gear. It’s been a while since we’ve visited Milton Keynes or Earls Court, or one of the numerous hotels around the UK we call home for any number of weekends through the calendar year. Many of you are itching to get back in the convention spirit, meet some fantastic guests from film and TV, and then party the night away and regret it the next morning. So, where are the best places to do this? We take a look at some of the UK convention highlights for this month and next:

Sherlock - Series 2Elementary (Starfury Conventions) – 7 – 9 February

As you may have guessed from the convention name, this is indeed a Sherlock Holmes event, celebrating all things Holmesian. What better way to do that than with Sherlock’s lead man Benedict Cumberbatch? He will be attending on the Sunday of the event. Fellow cast members Louise Brealey, Jonathan Aris and Lars Mikkelsen will also be at the convention, discussing all manner of things about the show. They are joined by Patrick Waggett and Arwel Wyn Jones, both of whom have worked behind the scenes on the BBC hit show, as well as Tony Lee, a huge Sherlock Holmes fan who has written a number of comics.

The convention will include guest talks, photo and autograph sessions and more. Full details are HERE.

Midlands Comic Con (MCM Expo) – 15 February

MCM have been growing their comic cons over the last few years and bringing a strong mix of traditional media, anime and manga as well as comics and gaming. Telford will once again play host to 1000s of eager fans who make their own costumes and enjoy meeting like-minded individuals. It’s a real celebration of how various fanbases can come together and have a good time. The highlight is top anime voice actor Vic Mignogna from such shows as Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach.

Information on guests, tickets and the venue is available HERE.

wilfCardiff Film and Comic Con (Showmasters) – 1 & 2 March

Showmasters return to Wales after a successful debut last year with their traditional style of signing event. These are a great way to meet your favourite film and TV stars, purchase autographs and photo shoots, and browse some dealer stalls to get as many geeky bargains as you can. This time Cardiff will be getting such guests as Devon Murray from Harry Potter, Bernard Cribbins from Doctor Who, John Rhys Davies from Lord of the Rings, and a number of other guests from Red Dwarf, Star Trek, Atlantis, Merlin, Stargate, Torchwood, Game of Thrones and comics.

Details of the full line-up and advance ticket purchases are HERE.

Newcastle Film and Comic Con (Showmasters) – 8 & 9 March

One week after invading Cardiff, Showmasters travel up to Newcastle for their first ever show. As with Cardiff, many of your favourite shows such as Doctor Who and Stargate are represented, as well as popular movie franchises like Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. As well as guests signing autographs and posing in various strange ways with fans, there will also be cosplay, comics and gaming. If you’re local to Newcastle and have never been to a convention before, this is a great place to jump in and start.

You can buy various advance tickets and see guest details HERE.

EM-Con – 16 March

A brand new signing event in Nottingham that features all things sci-fi and fantasy. Red Dwarf fans can meet Lister, The Cat, Rimmer, Kryten, Holly and Captain Hollister, while Game of Thrones fans are treated to a number of popular actors from the series including Kristian Nairn (Hodor), Miltos Yerolemou (Syrio Forel), and Gethin Anthony (Renly Baratheon). Plenty of other films and TV series are covered too, from Star Wars to Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Primeval.

London Super Comic Con (LSCC Ltd) – 15 & 16 March

One of the newer kids on the block, London Super Comic Con went down a treat when they launched with Stan Lee at their first ever event. A true ‘comic’ con in every sense, this is a comic book geek’s dream and you’ll need to delve through those comic book collections to see what you want to take! Artists, writers and more all join together in a huge celebration at Excel at Docklands in London.

Full event details can be found HERE.

buzz_aldrin_01Autographica 20 (Showmasters) – 21 – 23 March

If your tastes lean more towards a classic style of movies, perhaps old school Hollywood or similar, or even Sports or Space memorabilia, then Autographica is the place for you. It’s certainly a different experience from a traditional signing event – some would say slightly classier! Some of Hollywood’s most famous legends have attended Autographica over the years and wonderful memories are made. This time Buzz Aldrin returns to the UK in a real treat for Space fans, the twins from The Shining will be causing some real scares, and James Bond fans are catered for really well.

Details on the guests, shoots, dinner, lectures and more are HERE.

So, there’s plenty for you to sink your teeth into over the coming weeks, and things are only just getting started! With Collectormania, London Film and Comic Con, and MCM London Comic Con all still to come, you better start saving. Your bank accounts will soon be begging for mercy.
