Turbo Blu-ray Review

What’s It About?  Turbo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) is a common garden snail with very uncommon dreams. His passion and his fuel to keep going everyday is speed. And his dream is to become a race driver and compete in the Indy 500. After a freak accident, Turbo gains supernatural powers of speed. But even with that tremendous gift, nobody supports him. On their journey, Turbo and his brother (Paul Giamatti) meet a bunch of snail racers (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson and Michelle Rodriguez, among others) and a pair of Latin American brothers who try to serve Tacos for a living.  One of them, Tito (Michael Peña), tries to help Turbo achieve his dream. But a snail set on life in the fast and furious world of racing will have to face more than his share of obstacles.

TURBOVerdict? Turbo delivers a wonderful message of value not only to kids, but grown-ups too: follow your dreams, never give up and never settle for less by saying “this is good enough”.  There’s a whole world out there waiting to see you fail, ready to clip your wings. So many people will say “no” to your dreams, but you just have to keep going. That’s the great message Turbo has for its audience. And while kids might not take that in straight away, amazed as they will be by the movie’s beautifully bright colours and cool racing sounds, the message will still be there for them.

While Dreamworks (the studio that created Turbo) may be a few steps behind Pixar whose films tend to deliver subtle messages, they keep growing and perfecting the visual side of their films. The Dreamworks artists behind the magic, the geniuses who work endless hours to bring life to these fictional worlds, have managed to create astonishing shots and sequences for Turbo – look out especially for the crazy accident which gives the protagonist his powers as well as the final race. The movie also takes great care over colour and light, showing the influence of its visual consultant Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan’s regular cinematographer.

TurboAnd all that translates into a sharp, delightful Blu-ray transfer which will make the best of your HD screen. A strong DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround sound mix make you experience the sounds of the wind and the loud cars as if you were in the pit with Turbo and his team. And the cherry on top: the soundtrack will make your sofa buzz when the epic Eye Of The Tiger hits the speakers, along with other feel-good tracks including Jump Around.

Extras: Turbo offers a child-friendly pack of extras from a deleted scene (Meet Tito) to a featurette where Turbo’s interviewed by a journalist (Champion’s Corner), a featurette showcasing the designs of each of the racing snails, a compilation of all the songs featured in the movie, a storyboard gallery, and an hour-long video to help you draw your own snail characters.

Final Words: A fun fable that will entertain kids while leaving them with a positive message.
