With Valentine Day nearly upon us, what better time to look back at the most romantic moments brought to us by Mr Rom-Com himself, Richard Curtis? From Notting Hill and Love Actually to his latest release About Time, Curtis has helped to create some of cinema’s most swoon-worthy acts of love. Here they are for your viewing pleasure…
1. Love Actually – To me you are perfect
Who can forget when Juliet (Keira Knightley) opens the door to find her husband’s best friend, Mark (Andrew Lincoln), pretending to be a caroller and declaring his love for her on cue cards? While this scene would seem creepy or inappropriate in any other movie, it has gone down as a rom-com favourite around the world.
2. Four Weddings And A Funeral – Is it still raining?
In Four Weddings’ climactic final scene, Carrie (Andie MacDowell) turns up at Charles’ home after he left his fiancee at the altar. In the rain – which she doesn’t notice once he professes his love for her. While this scene is loved and mocked in equal measure, who doesn’t love a dramatic declaration in the rain?
3. Love Actually – Jamie proposes to Aurelia in her native tongue
Every girl wants a huge romantic proposal and Jamie (Colin Firth) proposing to Aurelia (Lucia Moniz) in broken Portuguese, with the entire town looking on, was just so lovely.
4. Notting Hill – I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy
Superstar Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) admitting that she’s in love with Will (Hugh Grant) is romantic and heartbreaking as he turns her down. Thankfully, it all works out in the end but it’s hard not to get choked up every time you watch this scene.
5. About Time – Tim asks Mary for her phone number
After the perfectly quirky first date – speed dating in the dark – Tim asks the adorable Mary for her phone number. The film introduces us to Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) who thinks he’s just a normal lad in a slightly wacky family. But when Tim turns 21, his father (Bill Nighy) lets him in on a family secret – he can travel through time. Naturally this causes a lot of interesting scenarios in love and life…
