Cameron Diaz stands up for women everywhere in this feminist romantic comedy, but is it worth giving it a go?
What’s It About? Cameron Diaz stars as Carly Whitten, an attorney that doesn’t take any chances when it comes to love, until she meets her new boyfriend Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). She thinks he’s the one, until she discovers he’s married and a serial womanizer. Teaming up with Mark’s wife Kate (Leslie Mann) they discover another mistress, Amber (Kate Upton) and the three women team up to teach Mark a lesson he’ll never forget.
Verdict: When the film starts, it looks like a typical romantic comedy. Girl meets guy, they have sex and romance ensues. The film introduces Mark’s wife Kate in a non-staged way with Leslie Mann just appearing on-screen, a good choice for a film that is filled with clichés and where you can see every other plot device or twist coming.
All three of the central female characters have a differing opinion on men, love and relationships. You certainly don’t want to mess with Diaz’s character; Carly is quite brutal in her approach, nicknaming her past conquests and berating Mann’s character as she repeatedly tries to contact her. She’s independent, strong and sassy, the opposite of Kate. It takes a while to warm up to the ditzy wife but Mann and Diaz’s chemistry on screen is great as they meet unexpectedly and bond (over much alcohol). Kate Upton’s Amber is nicknamed ‘The Boobs’ – she’s the most youthful of the three women and doesn’t take herself too seriously.
‘The Lawyer, The Wife and The Boobs’ combined launch themselves into caper after caper in order to get back at Mark and his cheating ways with laxatives and estrogen tablets. There are some sporadic laugh out loud moments and Leslie Mann is particular has some great physical acting pieces, particularly in the first half of the film.
Final Words: It’s certainly not the most original concept, three scorned women uniting to take on the wronged man, but it’s entertaining and does have some laugh out loud moments.
Extras: The DVD includes a theatrical trailer, gallery, a gag reel and a feature called ‘giggle fit’ which is basically an extended version of an outtake on the gag reel – it’s basically 5 minutes of Leslie Mann and Cameron Diaz laughing. There is also a deleted scene from early in the movie where Kate begins to have a meltdown. It also features more screen time for Thunder, the adorable goofy dog.
