The latest trailer for James Gandolfini’s final film The Drop has just landed, and it looks to be a really promising crime drama. It is a very small comfort that before his sad passing last year, Gandolfini did leave behind more completed work so we do get to see him on the big screen again.
Also starring Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace, the Brooklyn-set drama is directed by the Oscar-nominated Michael R Roskam (Bullhead).
The always-watchable Hardy stars as Bob, complete with Brooklyn-accent, trying to put a life of crime behind him and live on the straight and narrow. In a story we’ve seen time and time again on the big screen, he keeps getting drawn back in – this time by his cousin Marv (the late Gandolfini). This trailer shows the bar he works in getting robbed, and the trouble this puts the pair in, as well as Bob’s partner Nadia (Rapace).
“There are some sins that you commit that you can’t come back from, no matter how hard you try” says Bob, as we see scenes in a church at the beginning of the trailer. It seems he’s not going to be able to turn his back on crime too easily.
The trailer would appear to suggest Nadia and Bob are put in danger, possibly by Marv’s actions – it’s also a worry that we see Bob with his dog in both this trailer and the first – we hope he doesn’t get on the receiving end of the violence too.
Based on Dennis Lahane’s short story Animal Rescue, Lahane is the man whose books have gone on to become Shutter Island, Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone, and this time he’s written the screenplay himself. He’s previously written and produced some episodes of both The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, so we’re in very safe hands.
Looking like a dark, gritty drama, the quotes used in the trailer also suggest a big twist during proceedings – we won’t speculate at what this is (and just knowing there’s a twist is probably spoilerific enough) but it’s sure to be an enthralling – and certainly well-acted, given the calibre of the actors involved – piece.
We have high hopes.
The Drop will be in UK cinemas on 14 November 2014.
