Flicks and The City sat down with Flemish director Felix Van Groeningen to discuss his latest adaptation, The Broken Circle Breakdown. Felix tells us about working with the original playwright and on-stage star, Johan Heldenbergh, as the male lead and casting the role of Elise (Veerle Baetens). We also hear about his future plans following this bluegrass-themed drama.
Check out the interview below!

Didier (Heldenbergh) is a free-spirited, atheist banjo player in a Bluegrass band, and Elise (Baetens) is a faithful owner of a small tattoo parlour. When they meet, it’s love at first sight.

The young couple have an incredible chemistry and begin to settle into their new life together at a charming farmhouse Didier is remodeling. But as they prepare to welcome a baby girl into the world, little do they know a great tragedy is about to befall them and threaten their relationship.

Over the next six years, their daughter Maybelle (Nell Cattrysse) brings the eclectic pair even closer together until she becomes terminally ill. Then the differences that once attracted Elise and Didier to each look set to tear them apart.

This compassionate and poignant film won Felix a 10-minute standing ovation at the Berlin Film Festival.

The Broken Circle Breakdown is in UK cinemas on 18 October 2013.
