Maisie Williams in talks to play Ellie in The Last of Us
Sam Raimi has revealed in a surprise panel at San Diego Comic Con that talks have been held between himself, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams about the lead female role in the video game movie adaptation The Last of Us.
Maisie Williams, best known for playing the sassy Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, is slightly older than the 14-year old character, but she seems to be a good fit for the role. Ellie is far more mature than her age would suggest in the game, and has grown up in the apocalyptic world. Whilst talks have been held with Maisie, no deal is in place yet.
The Last of Us follows the story of Joel and Ellie 20 years after a pandemic has killed most people in the world. They travel across parts of America to get Ellie to doctors, along the way they meet an array of other characters, both human and the dreaded clickers, in the third-person horror-action game.
Whilst Joel is the main character, Ellie is the playable character at a point in the game, and in the DLC ‘Left Behind’.
It was announced in March that the hit apocalyptic PS3 game would be turned into a movie, but this was the first time it has been officially spoken about. Sam Raimi, best known for the Evil Dead and the original Spider-Man trilogy, will be producing the movie.
The character of Ellie has had some controversy around her for looking a lot like Ellen Page. In initial trailers she bore an uncanny resemblance, which was later toned down. The game came out around the same time as Beyond:Two Souls which did feature Page, who has been quotes as saying The Last of Us ‘ripped off her likeness’.
There is still no word on who might be playing Joel, the game’s protagonist.
Fellow cinematic Naughty Dog property Uncharted is also in development and has been for a number of years. It is currently scheduled for release on June 10 2016.
