Last Vegas review

Ever wanted to watch acting legends partying away in Vegas? Well, Last Vegas sees Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro showing The Hangover cast how it’s done.

What’s it about? The film follows Billy (Douglas), a wealthy bachelor who’s finally going to tie the knot with his much younger girlfriend.

The pair decide to have a speedy Vegas wedding so Billy gathers his old pals Archie (Freeman), Sam (Kevin Kline) and Paddy (De Niro) for a bachelor party they’ll never forget.

Verdict:  The films starts off by introducing us to the “The Flatbush Four”, a quartet of cheeky young boys acting cool and fighting over the girl-next-door. We then jump 58 years forward to the present day and find the old pals aren’t quite as spritely as they once were.

Achy hips, heart troubles and the death of partners mean things have slowed down for the group, but they head off to Vegas to live life to the fullest and party like it’s the 60s all over again.

Last Vegas imageWhat makes the film work is that the main cast clearly revel in the fact they’re playing their actual age yet are still able to portray the kind of silly, senseless fun that’s usually saved for teen comedy films these days.

They drink, they party and even judge a bikini contest, but the more serious issues they’re going through also play a big part between all the laughs.

The introduction of Mary Steenburgen as a sexy Vegas singer makes the storyline pretty obvious, but there are plenty of fun twists and turns along the way.

The film is about how we perceive old age and the power of love and friendships. The message is that you’re  never too old to enjoy life (though a wild weekend in Vegas isn’t necessarily the only way to come to that conclusion).

Final Words: A fun, easy watch that’s sure to make you chuckle despite the rather predictable storyline. Just what the doctor ordered!

Rating: 3.5 / 5
