Kate Mara The Martian Q&A

With the release of Ridley Scott’s The Martian on Digital HD this week, we’ve got an exclusive Q&A with Kate Mara who plays Beth Johanssen in the film.

Did you watch a lot of Ridley’s other movies in preparation for the making of The Martian?

No, not in preparation for this. I’ve re-watched a lot of Ridley’s movies just for the joy of it. He’s made a lot of my favorite films. I’ve seen Thelma and Louise countless times, and The Gladiator as well. I didn’t feel the need to research his other films in order to play in this one.

Any fun stories from being on The Martian set with Ridley?

On set one day we were talking about pets, Ridley has many animals and is a big fan of dogs. All of a sudden, in that moment, I remembered that my dog ‘Lucius’ is actually named after Lucius (the character) in The Gladiator. I guess because my dog is old, I had sort of forgotten where his name came from. So that’s a fun little fact and proof that I’ve been a fan of Ridley Scott’s for a long time.

So how difficult were the sand storm scenes to shoot?

Shooting the sand storm scenes were really intense. When I watched the film for the first time, it really did bring me back to those first couple days of shooting because it looks exactly how it felt. It was really hard to actually move, they had all of these fans surrounding us, blowing dust and debris at us and it was really hard to hear. All the elements were there, there wasn’t a lot of acting involved in that. It was really hard to stand up, definitely making it an exciting sequence to shoot.

How is it to work with a director such as Ridley Scott?

Ridley Scott is a master at what he does, and it’s so clear why he’s so successful at what he does when you’re on his set. He’s just so in control and so prepared, and he has this incredible energy and passion about him which is infectious. He has a serious trust in his actors, making you feel very free but also very safe.

How was it to work with Matt Damon?

He really is one of the best actors we have, but he’s also just such a good guy and so easy to work with. It takes a very specific actor to play Mark Watney, someone that the world wants to survive, that the world is rooting for and I think that Matt is the perfect guy for that part.

The Martian is available on Digital HD now, and on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD from 8th February.
