Flicks And The City caught up with Jon Favreau at the European premiere of his new movie Chef at the Old Brewery in Brick Lane.
In Chef (which Favreau wrote, produced, directed and stars in), he plays Carl Casper, a top chef who suffers from a bad critical review that spreads across the internet. He tries to prove the critic wrong, but loses his job in the process. With time on his hands, it gives him the chance to start up a food truck, and bond with his son.
On the differences between making this film to some of his recent blockbusters, he said, “on Swingers we had a lot less (money) than this, and it was an old set of skills that I was happy to see I still had”.
Favreau is, of course, well known to lots of people as the director of the first two Iron Man films that got the Marvel Cinematic Universe up and running. He re-teams up with both Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson for Chef: “We struck up a great friendship and when I sent them the script they didn’t hesitate – they jumped aboard for much less money than they deserve”.
Favreau also appears in all three Iron Man movies as Happy Hogan, Tony Stark’s bodyguard.
Downey Jr is currently only signed on to appear in the forthcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron and its follow-up, but on the prospect of a standalone Iron Man 4, Favreau said, “I hope he continues doing it, and as long as he fits in that suit, there’s no reason he shouldn’t.”
Chef also stars Michael Pena, Sofia Vergara and Dustin Hoffman. It is released in cinemas across the UK on 25 June 2014.
