Sundance: Anika Noni Rose & Malik Vitthal talk Imperial Dreams

Writer-director Malik Vitthal made a strong feature debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival with Imperial Dreams, the touching story of a young ex-con trying every which way to make a better life for his four-year-old son.

With superb performances all round, the film stars British actor John Boyega (Attack The Block) in the lead, Rotimi (Boss) as his brother, and Anika Noni Rose (The Good Wife, The Princess And The Frog) as his social worker Miss Price.

Flicks And The City sat down with Anika and Malik at Sundance to find out about their experience of making Imperial Dreams.

Check out the video to see Anika and Malik talk about the inspiration behind Imperial Dreams, how Anika became involved in the film, the importance of positivity in the film, what challenges they’ve overcome in their own careers, setting the film and working in the Watts neighbourhood of Los Angeles, real life happening around the shoot, casting and working with the 5-year-old twins who play John Boyega’s on-screen son, and what we can look forward to from them next.

Anika also tells us about starring with Denzel Washington and Sophie Okonedo in Raisin In The Sun on Broadway in Spring 2014, workshopping new musical Hamilton Mix-Tape about Alexander Hamilton, the adaptation of Half Of A Yellow Sun, how she’d love to play a movie superhero, and wanting to work with directors JJ Abrams, Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre), and Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave).
