Summer is officially over but don’t worry, the month of September has a whole host of brilliant films to keep you entertained!

The general theme of the month appears to be a little on the action side with Liam Neeson and Denzel Washington both releasing new films for us all to enjoy.

But if you would prefer more chilled-out viewing then comedy giants Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, and Zach Braff are also starring in some of this month’s biggest releases.

There’s also a whole bunch of dramas and thrillers to sink your teeth into, so no matter what you’re after in September, the cinema is sure to have something to tickle your fancy.

We’ve organised this month’s top films in order of release date, so get planning those cinema trips!

Before I Go To Sleep (15)

Release Date: 5 September

Why Should You Watch It? Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth are back on screen together this year, but this time they are dabbling in the suspense/thriller genre. The film follows a woman who, after a bad car accident, forgets everything about her life each morning. We soon discover that there is more to the accident than she thinks and, in her confusion and terror, she must work out who she can trust and who might have more sinister intentions. Before I Go To Sleep is not only full of mystery and tension, it is also hard-hitting and thought-provoking with one of the most satisfying twists that we have seen in a very long time. They Came Together (15)

Release Date: 5 September

Why Should You Watch It? Just the namesPaul Rudd and Amy Poehler should be enough to sell this comedy which focuses on the much underrated issue of hate at first sight! They Came Together tells the typical boy-meets-girl story, but with a difference – this film promises to reveal the real truth about love. The Boxtrolls (PG)

Release Date: 12 September

Why Should You Watch It? The Boxtrolls comes from the same people who made Coraline and Paranorman, so expect some incredible animation. The film follows a young orphan boy who is raised by underground, monster, trash-collectors – who are actually really sweet and lovable. However, the boy must fight to save his friends when an evil exterminator vows to have them all killed. The Boxtrolls is based on the children’s book ‘Here Be Monsters’ and is definitely one for all of the family! Check out our video of The Boxtrolls panel at San Diego Comic Con below!

A Most Wanted Man (15)

Release Date: 12 September

Why Should You Watch It? Another of the late acting legend Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final films. A Most Wanted Man is a high-tension thriller, which tells the story of a Chechen Muslim illegal immigrant in Hamburg, who gets caught in the international war on terror. Expect gripping stuff from one of the last films of one of the greats.

A Walk Among The Tombstones (15)

Release Date: 18 September

Why Should You Watch It? Liam Neeson stars in a crime/ mystery thriller – shock horror! Although, as the old saying goes, if it’s not broke, why fix it? Neeson is sure to give yet another phenomenal performance as scorned Private Investigator Matt Scudder, who is hired by a drug lord to find out who kidnapped and murdered his wife. Expect at least one great monologue.

The Giver

Release Date: 19 September

Why Should You Watch It? The Giver is based on the sci-fi book of the same name and looks at the fascinating concept of a utopian future. In this community there is no war, pain, or even colour and everybody abides by the Chief Elder (Meryl Streep)‘s rules. However, one day an elderly man chooses Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young boy, to learn the true pain and pleasure of the “real world”. Set to reach the same standards as adaptations such as The Hunger Games and Divergent, The Giver is definitely one to watch. Wish I Was Here (15)

Release Date: 19 September

Why Should You Watch It? Zach Braff of Scrubs fame stars in this brilliant comedy drama that follows Aiden Bloom, a 35-year-old man who finds himself at a major crossroads in his life. As well as being laugh-out-loud funny, there is a lot of heart at Wish I Was Here’s core, making it a perfectly rounded and enjoyable watch throughout.

Maps To The Stars (18)

Release Date: 26 September

Why Should You Watch It? Robert Pattinson and Julianne Moore star in this incredible film that follows a family who live in the heart of Hollywood and are chasing all things to do with celebrity, fame, and money. However, there are chilling undertones throughout as the mysterious ghosts of their past threaten to catch up with them.

The Equalizer

Release Date: 26 September

Why Should You Watch It? The Equalizer is another action-packed film in September’s movie releases. Denzel Washington stars as a former black ops commando who faked his own death in order to live a peaceful life. However, he comes out of retirement in order to rescue a young girl and finds himself face to face with Russian gangsters. Expect gripping, edge-of-your-seat stuff with this one!
