Tammy

Release Date: 4 July

Why Should You Watch It? It’s universally agreed that Melissa McCarthy stole the show as Megan in Bridesmaids – and she wasn’t even the main character! So it was only a matter of time before McCarthy got her own leading role and it has come in the form of Tammy. Telling the story of a woman who hits the road with her hard-drinking grandmother after losing her job and finding out that her boyfriend has been cheating on her, the film is set to be full of massive laughs and plenty of heart and good nature – be sure to check it out!

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Release Date: 5 July

Why Should You Watch It? Mark Wahlberg stars as Cade Yeager, a mechanic who joins the Autobots with his family after they are targeted by a bounty hunter from another world. Billed by director Michael Bay as the first of a second trilogy of Transformer movies, this installment is set to have all of the special effects, action, and story to keep it going for another two films and should satisfy fans of the previous films as well as welcoming Transformer newbies.

Boyhood

Release Date: 11 July

Why Should You Watch It? Boyhood is a cinematic first and is worth seeing on that originality alone. Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, the dedicated film tells the story of Mason (Ellar Coltrane) from ages 5-18 with the real marvel coming from the way that Mason literally grows up on screen in front of our very eyes. There has been a slight gap in the market for a heartwarming coming-of-age story that Boyhood fills perfectly, charting the rocky terrain of childhood and adolescence in a nostalgic ode to childhood and parenting. Set to a diverse and feel-good soundtrack, the 166-minute film might sound a little on the long side but with 12 years of story behind it, it couldn’t have been any shorter. A time capsule of a film that will remind you of your own childhood, this is definitely one of the must-see films of the year!

How To Train Your Dragon 2

Release Date: 11 July

Why Should You Watch It?  The long-awaited sequel to the 2010 film How To Train Your Dragon finally hits the big screen this month with most of the star-studded cast returning alongside some new voices, including Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington. Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless are back and find that they have to keep the peace after discovering an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons as well as a mysterious new Dragon Rider. Expect lots of laugh and plenty of action as the two friends unite to stand up for what they believe in as they realise that together they have the power to change to the future of both men and dragons alike!

Begin Again

Release Date: 11 July

Why Should You Watch It? Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo unite in this music-orientated comedy drama that tells the story of Gretta (Knightley) a lovelorn woman who has been left alone in New York City after her boyfriend’s infidelity. However, when a disgraced record-label executive stumbles across Gretta singing on an East Village stage he is immediately captivated and together the two form a mutually transformative collaboration. Alongside our two leads there are plenty of familiar faces in the film, including funny man James Corden and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine in his big screen debut with Begin Again set to be the feel-good film of the summer!

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Release Date: 17 July

Why Should You Watch It? 20th Century Fox’s second film in their reboot of the Planet of the Apes series, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sees the growing nation of apes threatened by a band of human survivors over a decade after the devastating virus was unleashed. After all attempts of peace prove futile the two sides are on the brink of war in order to determine who will prove to be Earth’s dominant species. Andy Serkis returns as Caesar, the leader of the ape nation and Gary Oldman joins the franchise as Dreyfus – the human who leads the uprising against them.

Joe

Release Date: 25 July

Why Should You Watch It? Joe has been doing the film festival circuit for quite some time but it’s finally coming to a big screen near you! An adaptation of Larry Brown’s 1991 novel of the same name, Joe tells the story of an ex-con (Nicolas Cage) who finds himself as an unlikely role model after meeting a 15-year-old-boy. Gritty and deeply moving this film combines friendship, redemption and old-school violence, resulting in a gripping and complex narrative with Cage giving a particularly strong performance in his portrayal of this fascinating and desperately-damaged title character.

The Purge: Anarchy

Release Date: 25 July

Why Should You Watch It? Just when you thought that the streets were safe again The Purge is back! In case you missed the first film of the series that came out last year, The Purge is a night where all crimes are legal and emergency services are closed down for 12 hours. Set to be just as horrifying as the original film, the sequel follows a young couple whose car breaks down right as the annual purge commences.

Hercules

Release Date: 25 July

Why Should You Watch It? We think we know the story of Hercules but this year’s adaptation is far from the all-singing, 90s Disney musical of the same name. Based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, this adaptation stars Dwayne Johnson as the title character – a demigod in ancient Greece who has his life tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter ask for his help in defeating a tyrannical warlord. A far cry from the story that we all know and love, Hercules tells the story of the man before the legend.

Guardians of The Galaxy

Release Date: 31 July

Why Should You Watch It? Marvel and Disney have united for the newest superhero film to hit the big screen. Guardians of the Galaxy follows Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), an American pilot who finds himself on the run alongside a bunch of misfits after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan (Lee Pace). Paving the way for a whole new set of superheroes, Guardians of the Galaxy will have the brilliant characters and gripping storylines of Marvel combined with the warmth, heart and beautiful visuals of Disney – making this an unmissable watch for the summer! The star-studded cast also features the likes of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, who lend their voices to their animated characters.
