Drug Lords in Film and TV
What better way to celebrate The Infiltrator coming out on Blu-ray and DVD today, than to take a look at some of the best drug lords from Film and TV. The Infiltrator is based on the book by Robert Mazur, a U.S. Customs special agent, who in the 1980s helped bust Pablo Escobar’s money-laundering organization by going undercover as a corrupt businessman.
Walter White – Breaking Bad
Walter “Walt” Hartwell White Sr. also known as Heisenberg in the criminal world. Before Walter went down the drug lord path he was a simple chemistry teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After being diagnosed with Stage 3A inoperable lung cancer, Walter decided to go into the drug business and so he started manufacturing crystal methamphetamine to both pay for his treatments and provide for his family in the event of his passing. Although Walter started the drug trade with good intentions it wasn’t too long before it eventually corrupted Walter, gradually making him darker and more villainous.
Pablo Escobar – The Infiltrator & Narcos
Pablo Escobar is the leader of the Medellin Cartel, the Columbian drug cartel from the 1970s. Escobar was introduced into the cocaine business when his cousin Gustavo Gaviria introduced him to Mateo Moreno, better known as “Cockroach.” Through Lion, Escobar was able to introduce cocaine to Miami, and soon was transporting it there through Carlos Lehder’s planes. Escobar was making new alliances which didn’t please Cockroach as he was worried he would get cut out of the profits. Cockroach leaked Escobar’s smuggling routes to DAS Agent Herrera, who then intercepted Escobar’s shipments in exchange for splitting the plunder with Cockroach.
Antonio Montana – Scarface
Antonia “Tony” Montana was a former Cuban Soldier. He was was imprisoned in Cuba along with his best friends Angel and Manny. Not too long after they all fled and departed to Miami as a Cuban refugee in the Mariel Boatlift in 1980. From first meetings Tony could be considered a rather good and decent guy, however his paranoia and addiction to cocaine clouded his judgement to an extent.
Saul Silver – Pineapple Express
Saul Silver is a drug dealer who sells marijuana out of his apartment and is the only person in Clark County selling the very rare Pineapple Express. Unfortunately him and his friend Dale Denton get caught up in a murder with a rival drug dealer and things just begin to spiral down for them both. The thing about Saul Silver is that he isn’t like other drug dealers, he’s not violent or a killer in fact he’s quite a nice guy who just happens to also sell the best weed.
Nancy Botwin – Weeds
Nancy “The Black Widow” Price Botwin-Scottson-Reyes-Bloom (or Nancy Botwin as she’s most commonly known) is left nearly completely broke after her husband’s death so she turns to selling marijuana in order to maintain her lifestyle. It doesn’t take too long for Nancy to quickly become one of the top dealers for Agrestic, to the dismay of other dealers in the area. She has even slept with her rival competitors in order to maintain her markets and continue being at the top. In the pilot, Doug Wilson’s son Josh tells her that the other dealers all resent her for the speed with which she established herself as a dealer. When the show opens, she’s a fledging but promising name in marijuana distribution.
