Last year, director Sam Mendes captivated cinema-goers with his 50th anniversary Bond movie, Skyfall.
Now, the Oscar winner is wowing West End theatre-goers with his stage version of Roald Dahl’s much-loved Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, superbly adapted by David Greig.
The mindblowingly and breathtakingly brilliant show opened last night at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane and features fantastic performances from all the cast including Douglas Hodge as Willy Wonka, Nigel Planer as Grandpa Joe, Tia Noakes as Veruca Salt, and Jack Costello as Charlie Bucket.
Dahl’s deliciously dark tale follows Charlie Bucket, one of 5 lucky winners of a golden ticket to the weird and wonderful Wonka Chocolate Factory where, as Charlie and his fellow winners find out, not everything is as sweet as it seems.
Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman have done a top-notch job with the show’s songs, while Mark Thompson’s set and costume design is a true visual feast.
