Home » Brie Larson talks Short Term 12 & Star Wars

If you don’t know it already, take a moment to make a mental note of actress Brie Larson’s name. It’s a name well worth remembering and one you’re going to hear time and again over the coming months as we move through the movie awards season.

You’ll have seen Brie in films such as 21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, and Don Jon, and alongside Toni Collette in TV’s United States of Tara.

But it’s her astonishing performance as a tough but vulnerable foster-care worker in her latest film, Short Term 12, that will see the 24-year-old actress hailed as Hollywood’s brightest rising star.

Written and directed by Destin Cretton, the film follows Grace (Larson), a 20-something supervisor at a foster-care facility, her colleagues and the at-risk teens in their charge as they deal with their difficult pasts and the arrival of a gifted but troubled teenage girl.

With Short Term 12 in UK cinemas on 1st November, Flicks And The City caught up with Brie to find out more about her work on the film, which nabbed both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at this year’s South By Southwest festival.

Check out our video to see Brie talk about what she learned by shadowing a care worker and how the experience affected her own life; how she and actor John Gallagher Jr, who plays her on-screen boyfriend and co-worker, created their characters’ back-story together; and how good she is at reading people and listening in real life.

Brie also chats to us about her role as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s on-screen sister in Don Jon, what her reaction would be if JJ Abrams approached her to be in Star Wars Episode VII, keeping the magic alive in movie-making, and her favourite movies including Scenes From a Marriage, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, Terminator, and Lord Of The Rings.

Short Term 12 is in UK cinemas on 1st November 2013.
