Bomb Girls Series 2 DVD Review

bomb-girls-0011If you’ve never seen or heard of Bomb Girls, it’s probably because it’s one of those well-loved shows that managed to fly under the radar for one reason or another. Some shows are destined for small yet passionate fanbases and Bomb Girls was one of them. Yes, sadly I say ‘was’ because it only lasted for a couple of seasons, although the fans luckily got a two hour wrap-up movie which is more than a lot of shows get.

There’s something special about Bomb Girls, and if you’re looking for something a little different to watch then I’d certainly recommend seeking out the first season. And if you saw the first, then you’ll definitely want this release of the second which will be welcomed by the UK fans that have been patient enough not to import!

What’s It About? It’s a show set in World War II following women in a munitions factory in Canada. It’s a unique setting, one that gives us an angle that isn’t followed very often, and the characters are all strong women which is always good to see. Of course being set in the 1940s, the treatment of women is a world away from the present day, however this is what makes the show intriguing. The odds are always stacked against the women, and they spend every episode fighting against adversity to earn their place in the world.

Bomb Girls manages to be dramatic on a number of levels. Obviously there’s the ongoing war which is drama on a grand scale but we also deal with the girls’ more personal matters. Whether it’s Gladys (Jodi Balfour) and her developing relationship with her parents, or Lorna (Meg Tilly) and her pregnancy, there are struggles around every corner which are familiar to viewers regardless of the war. Betty (Ali Liebert) tries to deal with her sexuality as she falls for fellow worker Kate (Charlotte Hegele) and things take a nasty turn. Bomb Girls certainly never skimps on the melodramatic, with each episode giving a new twist in their lives. Luckily it stays on the entertaining side rather than jumping too many sharks, and season two continues to be an enjoyable ride.Capture

Verdict: Bomb Girls sits proudly in the drama genre as a piece not only about war but about those affected by it too. The girls may well be the primary focus of the show but it’s certainly not narrow minded in its vision of how people lived through such an era. Bomb Girls can be praised for its portrayal of strong female characters in a variety of different forms, but at the same time it doesn’t look down on men as the root of all evil. The women here are just as capable of wrongdoing as the men, and the writers try to stay consistent and treat everyone on an equal footing. There’s no pretence or deceiving viewers into thinking females are the fairer sex, but in an era where girls did it have more difficult, there’s a lot to take away from Bomb Girls in a positive light.

Extras: Just the episodes on this set unfortunately.

Final Words: It’s easy to see why Bomb Girls has managed to attract such a passionate fanbase. It’s a show where the characters are almost larger than life and such fun to watch. They are ones you get caught up in and their journeys are anything but boring. Plus there’s always something mesmerising about a war setting, and Bomb Girls is no different there. If you’ve never seen the show then definitely start at the first series, and no doubt after you’ve seen that then you’ll be picking this up straight away. Another highly recommended series and such a shame that it’s the last full series the show will ever get.
