Beasts of the Southern Wild is director Benh Zeitlin’s first feature film and its young star Quvenzhané Wallis’ very first acting job.

Not that you’d ever know it from the stunningly beautiful, mesmerising film they’ve made about a remote community in southern Louisiana called the Bathtub.

Nine-year-old Wallis plays Hushpuppy, a young girl whose world comes under threat when her father falls ill and a big storm hits her home.

Zeitlin’s fantastical tale has already bagged rave reviews and awards from festivals including Sundance and Cannes, and is up for the First Feature award at this year’s BFI London Film Festival.

Check out the video to see Benh Zeitlin and Quvenzhané Wallis chat about Louisiana, casting, and getting angry.

Beasts of the Southern Wild is in UK cinemas from 19 October.
